Today we talk about plants What are plants? Plants are living organisms belonging to the kingdom Plantae that make their own food using sunlight. Key Characteristics of plants • Living things: They are born, grow, reproduce, and die. • Make their own food: Most use sunlight, water, and air to make food through a process called photosynthesis. • Cell walls: Their cells have rigid outer walls made of cellulose. • Multicellular: Almost all plants are made of many cells. Main Parts of a Plant are • Roots: Stay underground to hold the plant steady and soak up water and nutrients from the soil. • Stem: Supports the plant and acts as a pipe to carry water and food between the roots and leaves. • Leaves: Catch sunlight and air to make food for the plant. • Flowers and Seeds: Help the plant reproduce and grow new baby plants. Why Plants Matter in the ecosystem • Produce oxygen: They release oxygen into the air, which humans and animals need to breathe. • Provide food: They form the base of the food chain, feeding animals and people. • Provide materials: They give us wood, clothing fibers, medicines, and fuel. There are over a billion species of plant both the known and the unknown #smartjay #educational
